8th Grade Reading
The 8th grade reading course will focus on reading strategies, literary terms, and class discussions about literature, novels, short stories, and plays. Course content will build upon and expand students’ academic content from their 7th grade reading course. In addition, course material will prepare students for their high school English courses. Students will participate in group work, projects, performances, and oral presentations. Students will receive notification of tests, projects, and major assignment due dates well in advance. The use of their student planner is highly encouraged and helps students stay organized and on top of their school work. Parents should feel free to send notes or express any concerns through email.
All students are expected to come to class prepared with paper, pencil, and a silent reading book. Students are expected to abide by the behavior and academic expectations as outlined in their student planner.
Class Rules/Policies
Be Respectful
Students must treat their peers and teachers with respect. Disrespect is not permissible and depending on the severity of the offense, a detention may be given.
Be Responsible
Students need to be accountable for their own actions and responsibilities. Turning work in on time, coming to class prepared, and staying on task are expected from all students.
Be On Time
Students need to be inside the classroom and in their seat before the bell rings.
Independent Reading
In addition to daily assignments, students are expected to read at least 20 minutes per night. Three book reports are due each quarter. Students will receive independent reading time once every two weeks. Students will have one entire class period to read independently, work on a book report, or conference with the teacher about their current independent reading novel.
